The Space
Stepping in through the oversized door, you are met with the unexpected. The cowshed has been reimagined as a living space with a luxurious ski-chalet feel. Open to the roof, there is a feeling of space. The contemporary mezzanine structure, on which the King-sized bed and roll-top bath sit, appears to be floating, allowing the walls and ceiling to continue up to the apex around the sleeping space. The external walls of the ‘shed’ have been sensitively repaired to retain the essence of the existing building: Years of limewash and character left in place; the initials of the previous owners can be found, set in mortar, either side of the door; historic iron fixings and terracotta vents still adorning the walls. New interventions are clearly distinguished: An underfloor heated polished concrete floor; exposed steelwork; Douglas Fir joinery; a well-equipped kitchen; a modern shower room.
